Aikido is one of many budo-arts. However, it is the most peaceful I know. (I have to admit, tai-chi is peaceful,too. Nevertheless, you should not choose tai-chi for self-defense.)
At the first glimpse aikido is not far away from judo, in fact there are many similaries, but in its soul it completly differs. I can hardly describe it. You have to feel the spirit for yourself, maybe you visit a course. Actually, you can do this at University of Osnabrück. Just ask in the "EW"-building at UNI-SPORTS.
